How to fix iPhone zoom not changing lens (missing 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x)

By Gabriel ·

Short answer: if the 0.5x, 1x, 2x or 3x options disappear and the iPhone won't zoom or switch cameras, the problem is usually the camera module itself. The fix in my case is to open the phone and replace the camera. A replacement module was about $60 online, versus around $250 at the Apple Store.

Do you have an iPhone with three cameras and one day you lost the ability to change between them, or zoom in and zoom out doesn't work properly? In this video I show the problem on screen and explain what you need to do to fix it.

The symptom: lens options disappear

In the clip I show on screen, the camera app simply doesn't have the other options. You cannot change between the different cameras and zooming does not work properly. When these options are missing or they disappear like that, the problem is the camera itself, and the solution is to take the phone apart and replace the camera module.

Which iPhones this applies to

This applies to iPhones that have three cameras on the back, like the iPhone 15 and 16 models I mention in the video, where the camera app lets you switch between 0.5x, 1x, 2x or 3x. Future iPhones may use the same type of camera too. If yours has the same three-camera setup and the lens buttons are gone, or zoom in and zoom out stopped working properly, it is the same problem and the same fix. The good news is that you don't need a new phone: you only need to replace the camera module, and you can do it yourself at home with a few basic tools.

Camera module price: DIY vs Apple Store

These iPhones with three cameras use the same type of camera setup, so you can find the replacement module online. The one I found was about $60, which seems fair. If you take it to the Apple Store, I think it is around $250 to replace it. If you want to do it yourself, it is very easy.

What you need

  • A screwdriver for the two screws next to the charging port.
  • A heat gun to soften the glue around the screen.
  • An opening tool: a plastic pry tool, or something like a gift card. Use something that is not very pointy so you don't scratch the phone.
  • The replacement camera module.

Step by step: replace the iPhone camera

  1. Remove the two screws next to the charging port.
  2. Apply heat with the heat gun around the screen side of the phone.
  3. Use the opening tool to unglue the screen and take it apart.
  4. Look for the screws inside, remove them, and remove the motherboard and the pieces you have inside to get access to the cameras.
  5. Remove the old camera, put the new camera in, and put everything back together.

There are many YouTube videos about this, and it is very simple. Depending on the model, future phones may have different motherboards or layouts, so just follow the instructions for your phone. A long time ago I made a video about replacing the battery or motherboard in one of these phones, and basically all of them open the same way.

Need parts or tools?

I am in the US, and if you need tools or electronics I can ship them to you. Otherwise you can search for the camera module for your model and buy it yourself.
