Storage & speed converter

Storage unit converter (KB, MB, GB, TB, KiB, MiB, GiB), Mbps to MB/s and a download time calculator based on your internet speed.

Storage units

KB, MB, GB, TB = decimal (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, as drive makers use). KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB = binary (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, which Windows shows as "GB"). Kb/Mb/Gb = bits.

Speed: Mbps to MB/s

1 byte = 8 bits: a 100 Mbps plan means at most 12.5 MB/s of download in theory.

Unit converter and download time

Convert between KB, MB, GB and TB (decimal) and KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB (binary), go from Mbps to MB/s and work out how long a download takes at your internet speed. It explains why a 1 TB drive shows up as 931 GB in Windows or how long a 50 GB game takes to download on your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

Manufacturers use 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, but Windows counts in binary (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) and labels it “GB”. Same bytes, counted differently.

How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?

12.5 MB/s at the theoretical maximum, because 1 byte is 8 bits. In practice, due to protocol overhead and Wi-Fi, it's usually a bit less.

Why does the calculator have an efficiency option?

A real download almost never reaches 100% of the subscribed speed. 90% is a realistic estimate for wired connections; on Wi-Fi it can be lower.
