How to fix the HP Z4 G4 513 error: Configuration requires a Front Chassis fan
Short answer: error 513 – Configuration requires a Front Chassis fan means the HP Z4 G4 is not detecting the front fan, and the workstation stops at that message. The fix that worked for me: remove the front face plate, take the fan out of its plastic bracket and install the fan by itself, plug it into the fan connector, and turn the computer on. It boots with no errors.
Many people think something serious is broken when they see this message. In my case it was only the fan, and it took a few minutes.
What error 513 means
The message 513 – Configuration requires a Front Chassis fan appears because the computer is not detecting the front fan. Until it sees that fan, the HP Z4 G4 will not continue booting normally.
On a regular computer you could go into the BIOS and disable the fan-speed check. I could not find that option in the BIOS of this workstation, so installing the fan was the only solution I found for this computer.
Step 1: remove the front face plate
The face plate comes off easily:
- Pull the bottom part up a little bit.
- Push the other tab.
- The plate comes off and you can reach the place where the fan goes.
Step 2: why the original bracket did not fit
I had the original part that is supposed to go there, with its plastic bracket, but it did not fit in my HP Z4 G4. I tried removing pieces and placing the plastic in different spots, but there were no holes that lined up to mount it on that side.
Instead of cutting the case and doing a lot of work, I took the plastic out and installed the fan by itself. The description lists the fan part numbers for the HP Z4 G4: 907239-001 and 927568-001.
Step 3: install and connect the fan
Place the fan in its spot and connect it to the fan plug, which is right there. You can use any screw to hold it. With the screw on the top it is not going anywhere, because this is not a car and it does not move. If you want, you can drill an extra hole to add screws on the bottom too.
Step 4: power on and confirm the error is gone
Turn the computer on. It starts booting up with no 513 error and no other errors, and in my setup all eight monitors came up. If the workstation sees the fan, the problem is solved.
